For last year’s words belong to last year’s language And next year’s words await another voice.
– T.S. Eliot, Four Quartets
Alexa – the brain behind Amazon echo / dot – updates through the cloud automatically and is continually learning, adding new functionality and skills. The more you use Alexa, the more it adapts to your speech patterns, vocabulary and personal preferences.
The important aspect of above statement is “continuous learning” and “new skills”. Keeping in mind Alexa enabled devices are not always with a user, like a phone app which will probably spend most of it’s time in close proximity of a user. This is proven by timings at which our skills get enabled. They usually go up in the evening and are really busy during weekends because the device is a home device.
As skill developers we have to be aware of the fact of it’s primary usage is around family( Alexa doesn’t have an user identification system) and so all our skills are developed keeping in mind that a Mum, Dad or son and daughter will like to use the skill the same way.
